They've arrived
And now we have our cows: the top photo is Thyme (nee Daphne), almost 16 months old. We also have Parsley (nee Primrose) and Sage (nee Diamond) both coming up for two and a half years old and both with male calves in tow. They have come from the Whitestone herd based in Tedburn St Mary and were driven over to us this morning by Kate and Tony Reed and their daughter Tracy.

We are soo excited to have cows on the holding: it feels as though it has been a dream for a very long time and we cannot quite believe they are here. All three girls are red non-short-legged Dexters with impeccable pedigrees and, most crucially, are wonderfully tame. We did not quite expect it but, after leaving them to settle in their field for the afternoon, we went back early evening with feed and both Parsley and Sage ate from our hands.
We have given them a small section of the 4-acre field so they don’t wander the whole area and trample the grass and also so they can get used to us being up close and personal when we approach them. There is a line of electric fencing providing the boundary and we will simply move this along as they eat!!!
The two calves are both steers and so will be reared for meat, whether we sell on one at weaning to someone else or raise both ourselves is a decision to be made sometime early next year.
For now, we plan to spend a lot of time enjoying all five of them and getting to know their very different personalities…
