Frozen ground and frozen drinkers
Another stunning, frosty, bright, beautiful day. The long range forecasters tell us we are in for a very cold December: that would be sooo nice. We would trade walking through mud to having to break the water in the animal drinkers EVERY time!
Relaxed at Home
There was no wind today and the sun barely took the temperatures above 5 degrees but the poultry still love and use their wind/sun breaks. Here we have four of Queenie Baby chicks enjoying the security of the branches and hurdles, and probably the warmth too. All their drinkers were frozen solid today but fortunately the water in the water butts wasn’t so we were able to provide something for them until the drinkers began to melt. It was then extra corn rations at teatime to keep them all warm tonight (another cold one..)
In other news, our broody IG did not take kindly to us moving her nest and no longer wanted to sit on her eggs. It’s a shame that the embryos will have died but it is better than the bird herself spending her days and nights trying to keep the eggs at 37.5 degrees centigrade, whilst the temperature around her falls below freezing. She will have another chance in the spring!!!
Finally, a really good day with the goats: virtually no bullying and the Boers only screamed for their breakfast and then for the supper…. they obviously read our diary entry yesterday and decided they should behave!!!
