The dreaded strike
When we checked the sheep first thing we caught sight of Mrs Brown twitching a little. Our instant thought was fly strike as with the warm weather we have been having, flies have been on the increase. We have only ever had fly strike in our sheep twice before and one time was due to a botched vet castration that left a nasty infection.
Relaxed at Home
With fly strike you cannot 'wait till later' so we got all the sheep in a shelter and checked them all out. We found nothing on Mrs Brown but we did find a few maggots on Mrs White – there were so few and they were tiny so can only have been hatched for an hour or so, they hadn't even started to bury in the skin. Mrs White was not that mucky, nor were the others, but nonetheless, all sheep were dagged and cleaned to ensure there were no soiled areas at all where flies could get to.
We cleaned Mrs White up and were pleased to see virtually no soreness at all – a wash with Hiniscub left her spotless and us re-assured!! We are due to have the sheep sheared on Friday thanks fully – cannot come soon enough!!
