December chicks?? Really??
And so here we have Hedgerow Broody - Row for short (granddaughter of Queenie Bantam), and these are three of her eight chicks, hatched today, in a hedgerow, in a nest we had no idea existed!!! Her name of course suggests that this is perhaps not the first time she has done this!!!
Relaxed at Home
Today is of course 3rd December, it is winter, it has been raining for much of the last week, a lot!! Such a great time of year to have young chicks!! Not!!!
Thing is, Row hasn't been missing, we have been seeing her most days... usually at corn time (they aren't daft these birds). Obviously we have not been seeing her at 'puttig away time'- (we confess we don't count all 80 odd birds every night...)
Did we need eight more chicks, possibly not!!! Are they seriously cute, do we hope they all survive, are we proud of our amazing broody - of course!!
Needless to say, Row and her family are no longer in the hedge. They are warmly esconsed in our aviary with deep straw, chick crumbs, water, and safe from the weather and predators.
