30 day countdown
Yesterday we were very brave and entrusted ten of our precious goose eggs to three broody chickens. One is a known quantity: ‘Mile High’ is a 4 year old Indian Game cross who is probably the most ferocious broody we have ever had but who looks after her charges admirably (and yes she has nested in a bucket of bailer twine!!). The Maran on the right is from last summer’s ‘coloured eggs’ hatch and so an unknown quantity BUT she has been stuck fast to her cat basket nest box for almost two weeks now and we are thus cautiously optimistic. The third bird is a large black chicken (no picture), also hatched last summer from our own eggs so parentage is unknown. She too has been sitting well in a nest box in the stables and as she is the biggest bird, we have given here 4 eggs, and the others 3 each.
