Purring turkeys!
The turkey poults are ten weeks old and growing a-pace. As with previous poults at this age, they now 'hang around' with the adults, establishing pecking orders and generally being very noisy and very inquisitive. Already they are being led astray and learning how to roam the garden, sending Dragonfly (our 1-year old Gordon Setter) into paroxysms of excitement. Never has been the ‘stay’ command been so well obeyed by a dog’s mind as its ‘body’ quivers and shakes with (unrealised) anticipation.
Turkeys bond as a group far more than chickens and seem genuinely to get stressed when apart from each other or if split up. Their repertoire of sounds is quite vast and they all mean something different. Napoleon (our stag) often gobbles his way across the paddock to see Jack, all puffed up with a bright red head and slightly dropped wings (often a sign of potential annoyance/aggression) and then he stops, puts his head on one side and makes the most beautiful and quiet 'ooooh'/ purring type sound.
So – a happy turkey!!!! Phew!!
