Carrots!
We have not written many non-animal smallholding entries as yet. Moving in July did not leave us much ‘growing’ time: aside from the small matter of needing to get sorted with places to grow, ordering seeds, acquiring compost etc etc. To be fair, we have actually inherited a fabulous greenhouse and potting area and as mentioned previously, certain parts of the garden are starting to be reclaimed for some serious vegetable planting in the spring.
Relaxed at Home
And so to the carrots in the photo: on the 4th August we took advantage of a raised bed left in the greenhouse and planted a few rows of carrots. August is fine for a few late vegetables and salads and we looked forward to fresh carrots around Christmas. Firefly had other ideas however and decided he liked the look of the seeds, digging them up a few days later. To add insult to injury he left a huge mess in the greenhouse and then popped into the house with very muddy paws - bless.
We re-planted on the 27th August (had run out of seeds and kept forgetting to order) and made sure there was a dog/cat guard in the greenhouse doorway. We also planted mixed salad seeds which we enjoyed right into October and harvested lots of tomatoes from plants left by the previous owner.
And so to today - our first harvesting of the carrots - set to join the remains of the duck from last night (one of ours naturally) in a stir fry.
