Another successful hatch
Our very determined ‘hedgerow’ broody has managed to hatch TEN eggs (there were 13 in the nest) and so now our chick numbers are 18 – almost equaling the number of adult birds we have (19). These latest are all Indian Game crosses and no doubt will be as pretty as their mum – colours vary from a beautiful cream to the golden browns in the photo.
Relaxed at Home
Of the ten chicks, four are actually with the ‘hay-rack broody’’: you may recall the smashing eggs story on 2nd May when she lost all her Moran eggs. Well since then, we have left her alone and were not surprised when, despite not having any eggs under her, she refused to move from her chosen nesting space. We thus made a decision: to give her four of our hedgerow broody’s eggs just at the pipping stage. This we did (last night) and this morning found all four had survived the move and were hatched, dry and very very fluffy!!! She is now in the stable with the other birds (we have given her a cat carrying basket to sleep in and her own water and feed just outside). The hedgerow broody is in the 'hospital wing' of the barn and also doing a fine job of keeping her six fed and watered and safe!!
