Queenie does it again!!
Well, Queenie has done it again, she had seven viable eggs and she’s hatched six of them: three Exchequer Leghorns and three French Copper Maran. We were on day 25 of her incubation and usually chicken eggs take 21! We are not sure why hers took longer but we have a theory: she was sat on a plastic tray and she kept scraping off the shavings and straw and as such, it may be that the eggs did not get the full warmth they needed all the time. Too little or too much heat can kill the embryos but maybe just a very small fraction too little can delay the usual development. Who knows: it’s just a theory!

We have put Queenie and her new charges in the hospital wing in a dog cage so the chicks can get stronger before they have to mix with the hurly burly of the main stable stall. Queenie as ever is being a fab mum. The first thing she did when we put he her in the cage was to eat, and then eat some more.. and then after that do a huge broody poo – and these really really smell!!!
