Becoming a bottle-fed cria
Pluto has cottoned on very quickly to what to do with the bottle of warm milk we present. Today we managed to get a good litre of milk inside him, definitely his 10% and a bit more. He and Mercury seem reasonably relaxed and this evening Pluto and Mars were even having a bit of a run around together.
As a group, the remaining six alpacas were quite disparate for a lot of the day but gradually they seemed to come together as a group more by night time. Mercury and Pluto have kept up their low level humming which we believe to be more a re-assurance behaviour: a kind of ‘I am okay I think, are you okay?' type noise. Sorrell is being a star although she is only just giving us under a litre of milk and so we took a bit from the Boers as well. It was jolly hard milking them and they gave nowhere near the quantity of Sorrell at all. We think Sorrell is quite happy with the new feeding/milking arrangements – it does get to mean she has larger rations than the rest after all. |
