Polished cows!
Although it rather looks as though we have been polishing the cows, we haven’t!! The good news is that our ‘bulling’ observations continue to go well and the season we thought we had seen on the 10th in Parsley turned out to be correct because on the 28th we spotted the tell-tale sign of a string of mucus hanging from her rear end. With an 18 day gap, this is about right for a full cycle. Interestingly, this means that Parsley and Sage both had their first season after calving at around 2 months) 59 and 60 days respectively). Two months is a ‘suggested’ time after calving when the average cow starts cycling again, so our girls are proving somewhat text-book. Thyme is coming up for 60 days (25th July) so we are going to be keeping a very special eye on her. We are also now sorted with the AI (artificial insemination) in that we have back in touch with the Reeds, from whom we bought the three cows last year, and we have purchased semen from Bedger Ellis. His semen was used last year with Parsley and as we are really chuffed with the bull calf she has given us, we thought (guided by the Reeds) that this would be a good choice for all our girls this coming year. So, the calving for next year is now sorted ‘on paper’ as it were. NOT so the goats as whilst we now have Pepper up for sale, we are still in 'seven' minds as to how we want to proceed – not that we have anyone interested in him …yet!!! |
