And so back to the ducklings!! This cutie is one of just two hatched yesterday by Apple. There would have been more but the turkeys (for some reason only known to them) sabotaged her nest and so most eggs vanished or were broken. Apple is not entirely sure what she should be doing with her charges and for a little while, both of them joined forces with Orange’s brood. This chap (or chapess) however, was very sure that Orange was not his mum and so sought out Apple again and from then on stuck to her like glue. He is the fastest duckling we have ever had and when at one point, his legs and his body did not quite co-ordinate and he ended up on his back in a muddy puddle, he simply rolled back over and kept on running.
Hedgerow’s two ducklings seem to be happy with any ‘mum’ and at times today and yesterday have been spotted with Orange’s brood (their actual siblings) or with Berry and Banana’s lot BUT they do go back and spend time with Hedgerow as well.
We now have 28 ducklings and are destined to spend much of the next few days/weeks counting. Between them they have FIVE mums and so we remain cautiously hopeful that all will keep safe.
