Sunshine-shiny coats
The forecasters got it right: we have indeed had the most fabulous bank holiday weather! The fields have become drier and the grass has had a real growth spurt! And just take a look at these two: coats shining in the sunshine and that usual Dexter look of slight indignant grumpiness that we have come to know and love. There is just eleven months between these two steers, the younger is Parsley's from this year, the older, Sage's from last year! The bonding between them and all the other calves is fabulous. It is very rare that the group of eight is NOT all together, very unlike the sheep where sometimes they can be spread out all over the field. And we just love it when they have their running sessions. Quite what triggers them sometimes, we don’t know but when one takes off, the rest are sure to follow. Seeing them do this and doing it often, has put us off strip grazing a little as the smaller amounts of land they get when they strip graze, means less space for a good long gallop. In a way, because we are not overstocked, strip grazing is perhaps not as necessary as if we had less land or more stock. Something to ponder on!! |
