A gorgeous frosty morning today as the photo shows – we even had some frozen woodchip – although it was not enough to stop Caraway lying down on it: shows what thick coats the cows have even on their underbellies.
It was good that things were a bit frozen today as the woodchip is getting a little saturated and in places starting to compress down just a bit too much. We also are a bit concerned how much hay gets wasted when the cows eat from the outside racks. Inside the shelters, anything that is spilt becomes bedding, outside it has the potential to get mixed up with the woodchip which is hard to tidy and means the woodchip then becomes too full of decomposing material which, in theory, may shorten its lifespan.
But…. we have plans to help with both of these issues that involve round bale feeders and mats – more later in the week – we hope!!
