Lamb alert!
As previously mentioned, we feed the sheep every evening with a handful of sheep pellets, and ditto for the alpacas. For the last few days however, we have had a somewhat jealous audience as the field next door is now filled with some of Denis’ ewes and lambs and as soon as they hear/see Jack walking up with the yellow bucket, they all come flocking over. There is no gratification for them though as they never get any of the feed but it appears there is no harm in hoping!!!
Tonight however, we were distracted by the sound of some very laboured breathing coming fromm the other side of the fence and within a few seconds had spotted a very poorly young lamb who looked and sounded as though he had some kind of pneumonia. As luck would have it Denis happened to enter the field at that point (with his own bucket of feed) and so we were able to point out the poorly lamb.
An experienced shepherd, Denis gently herded the lamb towards the main flock (who were busy eating the feed he had scattered) and was then able to grab him/her from between the bodies of the munching ewes. He was a pitiful sight with his whole body heaving in and out as he struggled to breathe. He was also a good deal smaller than his twin. Hopefully a shot of antibiotics will do the trick and he will be reunited with his mum and brother soon!! |
