Where have all the eggs gone?
We are having to work jolly hard at finding all our eggs at the moment – this was our latest discovery and by the looks of it, three different birds have been laying in this particular nest – in a hedge - accessible only by climbing over a fence and through a load of blackthorn and brambles!!!!!
We find eggs in hayracks, behind bales, in various field shelters, in cat baskets, behind bits of wood... And the worse of it is that often, once we discover a nesting site, the birds concerned stop laying there and go off somewhere else.
Egg production does fall a lot as the nights draw in but most of the time we are unsure whether the birds have stopped or slowed down, or are simply being secretive behind a stack of straw!! The joys of free-range birds!!! |
