Eating their greens
We have managed to get hold of a load of lettuces for the rhea – as the grass wanes, we are keen to give them fresh greens still in our on-going efforts to ensure their diet is as good as it can be and so support their growing bones and muscles.
The greys are far more interested than the whites. We think this is because the greys were hand reared and given a lot as chicks, whilst the whites were raised by their dad and so ate from the pasture they were on, rather than being given greens by their human owners.
Nonetheless, a whole lettuce disappeared pretty quickly which was great to see. We also feel that in giving then treats such as this, they are becoming more and more tame. And that can only be a good thing (we hope). |
