We continue to thoroughly enjoy our love affair with the rhea. We are starting to ponder the breeding plans which first and foremost mean looking at our male/ female ratio. At about 14/15 months old, our birds are still not sex-able, not with 100% accuracy. We were told that it should be obvious by 18 months.
In an ideal world we want two of each within each colour so we can swap and have the male greys with the female whites and the female greys with the male whites. We possibly won’t get that lucky!! Our current guesses are 2 grey and 3 white males!! So, not ideal, all the more so because any additional males we get we will probably have to sell...
