Nesting and dabbling
We now have three geese nests in the barn containing between them, 20 eggs!!! Our plans are NOT to hatch any artificially but to let the geese do things their way BUT, in order to maximise laying numbers, to give what we can to any chickens that go broody! Yesterday, we gave four
to one of last year's cross breeds (a large-ish black chicken) and have set her up in the stables broody area itself, away
from nosey turkeys!
The geese themselves probably won't sit till they have a good 12-15 in the nest and so if we get any more broodies in the next week or so, we should still be able to take a few eggs away. And as the second picture shows, the geese are enjoying the wet a lot - making their own ponds where once there was grass... it will grow back, hopefully, eventually... Geese nests are a work of art aren't they? |
