Planting reeds
Today we did a really bizzare thing: we dig up a bunch of reeds from the garden and replanted them in the poultry area!! A 'weed' after all is simply a plant in the wrong place.
Our aim is to get the reeds growing in the area currenly covered with grass mats that in the winter is basically wet the whole time. To establish grass there again will be nigh on impossible but reeds should not only grow well in the wet, they should also help prevent mud spread. Having planted them we then put the mats back on top in the hope that the reeds will simply grow through. We need to plant a lot more and fortunately (or not) there are a fair few growing back in the bottom 3 acre (now named the rhea field). It will be interesing to see how this mad idea works!!! |
